Show Title: American Images featuring the music of Aaron Copland
Selections: Aaron Copland composed some of the most important and identifiable themes in American music history. The opener is an arrangement of Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man and themes from the 3rd Symphony. The second selection is The Promise of Living, from Copland's The Tender Land, an opera that tells of a farm family in the Midwest of the United States. After viewing Depression-era photographs Copland was inspired to write this opera. The final piece is based on the theme from The Red Pony, a movie adaptation of John Steinbeck’s episodic novella.

Band History:
The Bands of Northwestern have been recognized for many years for excellence in all areas; marching, concert, jazz and color guard. The band has been the recipient of the South Carolina Outstanding Performance Award for the past 19 consecutive years. The Purple Regiment has been a consistent State 5A and 4A marching finalist for the past 14 years; winning two upper state 5A championships in 2004
and 2005. The band was the State 4A marching band champion in 2008 and the Silver Medalist in 2009. The Symphonic Bands have been selected on two occasions; 2000 and 2006, as the feature performers at the South Carolina Music Educators Association Conference. The Jazz band has performed in that same venue in 2006 and has been selected to perform this coming February. In addition, The Northwestern Jazz Combo has been selected to perform in the 2011 Jazz Education Network Conference in New Orleans in January.
