Mohamad Schuman
Music Effect

Mohamad Schuman is the Associate Director of Bands at The University of Southern Mississippi. At the university, he teaches courses in Instrumental Methods and Administration, conducts the Southern Miss Symphonic Winds, and directs The Pride of Mississippi Marching Band that is scheduled to appear in the 2010 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Prior to Mr. Schuman’s appointment at Southern Miss, he enjoyed an extensive teaching career in the public schools of Mississippi. During his tenure at Stone High School, his bands established a reputation for excellence throughout the United States and performed at various prestigious events including the 2001 Midwest Clinic, 2001 and 2006 Southern Instrumental Conductors Conference, 2001 Mississippi Bandmaster’s Association Convention, 2002 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and the 2005 Inaugural Parade for President George W. Bush. Mr. Schuman most recently served on the MENC instructional staff for the 2010 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band

Mr. Schuman has twice been honored by the National Band Association with its Citation of Excellence was named as one of three national winners of the 2004 NBA International Conducting Symposium in Rome, Italy. He has been named the state and regional winner of the ASBDA-UMI Distinguished Band Director Award (1998), twice named Star Teacher for Stone High School (2003, 2005), twice named GCBDA High School Band Director of the Year (1997, 1999), and honored by the Delta chapter of Phi Beta Mu with the Mississippi Band Director of the Year Award in 2003.

Mr. Schuman holds both the Bachelor and Master of Music Education Degrees from The University of Southern Mississippi. He is a member of various professional associations and has enjoyed numerous clinic and judging invitations. Mr. Schuman is currently in the final stages of completing the Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in Conducting at the University of South Carolina where he is a student of Professor James K. Copenhaver.


Tony D’Andrea

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Tony D’Andrea was Director of Bands at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga from 1982 until his retirement in 2005. The ensembles under his direction included Marching Band, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Pep Band and Jazz Band.

A native of Stratford, Connecticut, Professor D’Andrea holds a B.S. and M.S. in Music Education from the University of Tennessee Knoxville. He has extensive directing experience at the high school and college level and brings to his students years of experience as both teacher and professional performer.

Tony maintains an active profile in all aspects of Music Education throughout the state, region and country. He is active with numerous guest appearances as conductor, adjudicator, clinician and performer. Tony’s affiliation with professional music organizations is extensive and varied. Prior to his UTC position, Professor D’Andrea served as Director of Bands at the University of Tennessee at Martin and Band Director at Doyle High School in Knoxville, TN.


Phil Min
Music Execution

Phil Min has been a band director in Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi for over 30 years, teaching students of various ages, from fifth-grade through university level. He is presently serving as band director at Bragg Middle School in Gardendale, AL, returning to teaching in Alabama after several years as Associate Director of Bands at Mississippi State University. Bands under his direction have consistently won many honors and have been selected for performances at state and regional conventions. His education includes a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Master of Education and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Memphis. In addition to working as a band director, Phil has served for a dozen seasons as an instructor for several drum and bugle corps, including Spirit of Atlanta and the Ventures. Twice a recipient of the National Band Association's "Citation of Excellence", he is widely in demand as a clinician and adjudicator. Dr. Min's professional affiliations include memberships in MENC, Phi Beta Mu, and NBA.


Randy Szostek

Hometown: St. Charles, Illinois

Mr. Szostek is a graduate of DePaul and National Lewis Universities, and has directed concert, jazz, and marching bands of all age levels. He taught at Fenwick and Westmont high schools, and conducted the Chicago C.Y.O. Band in open-class competition. Randy is active as a band and percussion clinician as well as a free-lance performer. He also conducts the Americana Concert Band, which is comprised of thirty professional musicians from the Chicagoland area. In 2003, Mr. Szostek was presented with the Chicagoland Outstanding Music Educator Award. Randy's professional memberships include the Illinois Education Association, Chicago Federation of Musicians, Central States Judges Association, C.Y.O. Club of Champions and Percussive Arts Society. Mr. Szostek lives in St. Charles, Illinois and teaches in the Batavia Illinois Public Schools.


Cecil Adderley

Cecil Adderley, Ph.D., Chair of Berklee’s Music Education Department, is an accomplished educator, performer, and has over 20 years of teaching experience at both the junior high, high school, and college levels. He has performed professionally in the Charlotte Community Band (NC), as a clarinetist, and the Asheville Symphony Orchestra (NC), as a violinist. In addition, Dr. Adderley has considerable experience as a professional designer, drill instructor, and coordinator of both drum and bugle corps, and marching bands. Cecil Adderley is a former actor represented by the Jan Thompson Agency, Inc. (JTA) of Charlotte, NC, and is also an Argentine Tango Dancer, studying with Fernanda Cajide and Raul Cabral. He also serves as an adjudicator for arts festivals throughout the United States.
Dr. Adderley has experience with music technology and uses web-based instructional methods and materials. He has also written a number of published articles on topics that range from teacher preparation, strategies for teaching with technology, to the climate of the high school music classroom in the Journal of Research in Music Education, Choral Journal, Contributions to Music Education, Journal of Band Research, Southeastern Journal of Music Education, and Strategies for Teaching: Technology. He has also given scholarly presentations at a number of national and international conferences including the ISME (International Society for Music Education).

Cecil is also one of the contributing authors to, Musical Experience in Our Lives: Expanding the Boundaries of Music Education, Chapter 13, Music in Motion: An Overture to the Student Experience in the Outdoor Music Ensemble. Dr. Adderley holds a B.S. from Western Carolina University, an M.M. from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina.

Chip Birkner

Chip Birkner is the Assistant Director of Bands at the University of Florida where he serves as Associate Director of the Gator Marching Band, Director of Pep Bands, Conducts Concert Bands, as well as teaches courses in music education.

Prior to his appointment at the University of Florida, Mr. Birkner held positions in the Texas public schools as the Assistant Director of Bands at College Park H.S and Knox JH in The Woodlands, TX, as well as similar positions in Tomball, TX and La Porte, TX.

He received his Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music in Percussion Performance degrees from the University of Florida. He is an active member of Collegiate Band Directors National Association, Florida Bandmasters Association, and Texas Music Educators Association. He is an active clinician/performer across the United States.


Tim Wise

Timothy L. Wise received the Bachelor of Music Education in 1991 from Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky. While attending MSU, Mr. Wise studied with Dr. Richard Miles. In 2003 Mr. Wise received the Master of Arts in Education from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina studying under Dr. John West and Mr. Bob Buckner.

Mr. Wise has been director of bands at Tuscola High School since the fall of 1993. Under Mr. Wise's leadership, the band program has more than doubled its overall enrollment. The symphonic band receives consistent superior ratings at the district music festival and performs upward of five concerts locally a year. In 1996 and 2007 the band was selected to perform at the North Carolina Music Educators State Convention in Winston Salem. The marching program consistently receives superior ratings at regional events and participates in Bands of America national and regional events being named a regional finalist 4 times. The winter guard is a past class champion and WGI regional finalist. The percussion ensemble has twice performed at the North Carolina Percussive Arts Society State Convention and at the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival in 1998.

Before coming to Tuscola, Mr. Wise was Assistant Director of bands at Riverdale High School in Riverdale, Georgia. While at Riverdale, the bands received consistent superior ratings at state festival and at state and local marching events. The symphonic band was selected to perform at the Bands of America National Concert Band Festival in Chicago, Illinois.

Mr. Wise is member of NCMEA, MENC, and Phi Mu Alpha. He is the past president for the WNC Bandmasters Association. He is also the past chairman for the North Carolina State Marching Band Committee.
